7 Signs Your Tree Needs to Be Removed — A Northern Ontario Guide

A dying or damaged tree can become a serious hazard to your home, family, and property. Here are 7 warning signs that tell you it's time to call a professional.

Trees are one of the most valuable features of any Northern Ontario property — they provide shade, beauty, and privacy. But a dying, diseased, or structurally compromised tree can quickly become one of the most dangerous things on your property. Knowing when to call a professional tree service can save you thousands of dollars in property damage and protect your family from harm.

1. The Tree Is Dead or Dying

A dead tree has no structural integrity. Without living wood to hold it together, a dead tree can fall without warning — especially during the heavy snow loads and ice storms common in Northern Ontario winters. Signs of a dead tree include no leaf growth in spring, brittle branches that snap easily, and bark that falls off in large sections.

2. Large Dead Branches (Widow Makers)

Dead branches in the upper canopy — often called 'widow makers' — are extremely dangerous. They can fall at any time, especially during wind storms or after heavy snowfall. If you notice large dead limbs hanging over your home, driveway, or areas where people walk, it's time to call a professional immediately.

3. The Tree Is Leaning Significantly

While many trees grow with a natural lean, a sudden or significant lean is a serious warning sign. This often indicates root damage or structural failure at the base. A leaning tree near your home, garage, or power lines is an emergency situation that requires immediate attention.

4. Fungal Growth at the Base

Mushrooms or fungal conks growing at the base of a tree or on its roots are a sign of internal decay. The fungus feeds on the dead wood inside the tree, hollowing it out from the inside. A tree that looks healthy on the outside can be completely hollow and structurally unsound.

5. Cracks or Splits in the Trunk

Deep cracks or splits in the main trunk are a sign of structural failure. These can develop after lightning strikes, severe storms, or as a result of disease. A split trunk is unpredictable and can fail suddenly under load — like a heavy snowfall or strong wind.

6. Root Damage or Heaving

If you notice the soil around the base of a tree lifting or heaving, or if the roots have been damaged by construction, trenching, or soil compaction, the tree may no longer be anchored securely. Root damage is often invisible until the tree falls.

7. The Tree Is Too Close to Your Home or Power Lines

Even a healthy tree can be a hazard if it's growing too close to your home, garage, or power lines. In Northern Ontario, where ice storms and heavy snow are common, branches and whole trees can come down on structures. If a tree's canopy overhangs your roof or its branches are within striking distance of power lines, it's worth having a professional assess the risk.
